Ofgem's new regulation to take effect soon
Ofgem launched a programme in 2018 to implement a new reliable, fast, and cost-effective switching process designed to improve energy consumers’ experience of switching and build their confidence in the market. They regulated that from 18th July 2022, suppliers must offer both domestic and non-domestic meter points the opportunity to switch within 5 working days.
At Total Energies Gas & Power, we have been working hard to develop the necessary technology and update our internal processes to support the new non-domestic switching process, enabling us to deliver faster switching to our partners and customers in line with Ofgem’s programme.
We are pleased to announce that from go-live of the new process – 18th July 2022 - we shall be offering non-domestic customers the ability to switch within 2 working days.
If you are interested in switching supplier and would like to find out more, please contact 0800 276 1014 (9am-5pm, Monday- Friday) or request a quote online. More information can be found on the Switching Programme page of Ofgem’s website:
As with any change, the transition period can be worrying, so we’ve compiled some key questions and answers below. If you’d like to find out more, please contact one of our team.
Faster Switching is the name given to the Ofgem regulatory project designed to ensure energy consumers can switch their supplier easily, and with confidence. Ofgem state that effective switching will strengthen competition in the energy market which will, in turn, benefit consumers.
The project will deliver a new faster switching process to enable consumers to switch suppliers within five working days - considerably less time than is currently possible. The project requires suppliers and partners to make substantial changes to their internal processes, systems and technology, which may impact a small group of customers.
Ofgem have advised that, at a later date, they will be reducing the switch timelines to 2 working days. In advance of that change, we will be able to deliver a 2 working day switch to non-domestic customers from 18th July, 2022.
Energy regulator Ofgem is aiming to help energy consumers switch their supplier more easily and with greater confidence. The introduction of faster, more reliable switching should mean increased competition in the energy industry which will, in turn, offer consumers savings on energy bills, improvements in customer service, increased choice and reduced harm from either delays or erroneous switches.
All businesses operating in the energy market will be impacted by the new faster switching process, as they move to accommodate the new timelines.
