New advice on carbon budgets

On 27 March 2021, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) published three separate pieces of advice to government.

What does this mean to the end-user?

Together these documents:

  • Recommended a target of an 82% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for Northern Ireland
  • State firmly that international carbon credits should only be used in addition to domestic emissions reductions, not as a substitute for them
  • Recommend that the moratorium on fracking should only be lifted if environmental concerns can be overcome, and if such a decision is in line with the UK’s net zero target

End users should take this advice as further evidence that the UK will need to undertake a wide range of far-reaching action to deliver its net zero targets.
