Scheme Closedown
The Government is closing down both Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) and the Energy Bills Discount scheme (EBDS). The law backing both schemes has been updated in early 2025, and the final closedown obligations are in place from end of March 25.
The updated rules confirm no new money is available to further support customers during the energy crisis period, even if new information becomes available.
However, suppliers remain obligated under the original law indefinitely to pass any newly discovered overpayments from either scheme back to the Government, as the money is the taxpayers, not customers or suppliers.
What is the Energy Bill Relief Scheme?
The EBRS was designed to provide non-domestic energy users worst affected by the high energy prices with much-needed help with their energy bills over winter 2022/2023.
The scheme ran from 1st October 2022 – 31st March 2023 across Great Britain, and the government provided a discount on energy bills over this period.
More information on the scheme can be found in the government’s press release here.
