In a significant move towards modernising the UK's infrastructure, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the energy regulator Ofgem have announced the latest updates on the phase-out of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS). This collaborative effort aims to ensure a smooth transition for customer still using RTS meters.
As of yesterday (30th June), the carefully managed phase-out of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) began. The latest updates on this are:
Industry, Government (DESNZ), and the regulator, Ofgem, have agreed on the first stage of a managed phase out, with the signal being switched off for small groups of meters at a time. This phased approach will allow suppliers to contact affected customers in advance and ensure the process runs smoothly before continuing further.
As the signal will be phased out, if a customer has an appointment scheduled after 30th June or is offered one, they should not be concerned. All affected customers will be contacted prior to their meter being switched off.
To avoid disruption, it is recommended to book a meter replacement as soon as possible. Customers are advised not to delay, as there is increased demand for appointments.
There are now technical solutions available for every business, so if a customer was previously informed that a replacement was not possible, they should still get in touch promptly.
Key Agreements and Plans:
Phased Switch-Off: The RTS signal will begin to be phased out from 30th June, 2025. This gradual approach will allow us to manage the transition more effectively, ensuring minimal disruption to customers.
Supplier Responsibilities: Energy suppliers like us have an ongoing meter replacement programme and we've been proactively contacting customers with RTS meters to arrange a replacement. Suppliers are also expected to provide regular progress updates to Ofgem to monitor the replacement rate and address any emerging issues promptly.
Customer Engagement: Customers with RTS meters are strongly encouraged to engage proactively with their energy suppliers. If contacted regarding a meter upgrade as part of the RTS programme, it's crucial to book an appointment as soon as possible to avoid any disruptions in service. We've been reaching out through various channels, including direct communication and awareness campaigns.
Technical Solutions: The industry has developed technical solutions to ensure that all businesses, including those difficult to upgrade, can transition smoothly to a new meter.
What is RTS and why is it being switched off?
The Radio Teleswitch Service uses a radio signal to control and manage specific older electricity meters, allowing seamless switching between peak and off-peak rates. Designed to support customers who use electricity for heating and hot water, the RTS is particularly beneficial for users of electric storage systems, panel heaters or immersion heaters, which often charge up overnight.
Introduced back in the 1980s, the RTS is now reaching the end of its operational life to the inability to maintain the equipment generating the radio signal. As a result, the Radio Teleswitch Service will be discontinued on 30th June 2025.
If you are uncertain whether you have an RTS meter, here's what to consider:
We are working in partnership with our meter operation provider SMS to facilitate the migration of our customers from RTS meters to smart meters. SMS will contact you to arrange an appointment to have your meter exchanged. Due to the thousands of customers who require this change, we strongly recommend the customers schedule this in as soon as possible either by requesting a meter upgrade online or by responding to the SMS team when contacted.
If we've been in touch, but you've yet to take any action, or are unsure if you have an RTS meter, please contact us at [email protected]. We can check your meter for you and help process an upgrade if needed.
