The Radio Teleswitch Service Switch Off

End of Radio Teleswitch Service for UK Business Customers

TotalEnergies Gas & Power wishes to inform its valued UK business customers that the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be discontinued as of 30th of June 2025. This change is part of a broader industry wide transition within the energy sector towards more modern and efficient technologies.

An RTS taskforce has been set up to facilitate the upgrade of all RTS meters ahead of the switch off date and includes key organisations such as Ofgem, energy suppliers, government and network operators. The taskforce is also working to ensure all suppliers have contacted their RTS customers to inform them of the shutdown and to offer a meter upgrade where possible.

Therefore, TotalEnergies Gas & Power has identified and communicated with affected customers, and we are committed to driving engagement to reach those with an RTS meter ahead of the switch off date.

Alex Shelton, Head of Industry Operations at TotalEnergies Gas & Power said:

"The RTS Switch off date is rapidly approaching, and we are diligently working to ensure the transition to a new smart meter is seamless and well-coordinated. We strongly encourage businesses to take proactive measures well before the 30th June to prevent any disruptions. Upgrading to a smart meter has numerous advantages too. You'll be billed based on what you've used and not on estimates and they'll be no need to take manual meter reads, this is all done automatically. Our dedicated teams are available to assist you throughout this process and can answer any questions".

Upgrade today

We are working in partnership with our meter operation provider SMS to facilitate the migration of our customers from RTS meters to smart meters. SMS will contact you to arrange an appointment to have your meter exchanged. Due to the thousands of customers who require this change, we strongly recommend the customers schedule this in as soon as possible either by requesting a meter upgrade online or by responding to the SMS team when contacted. If we've been in touch, but you've yet to take any action, or are unsure if you have an RTS meter, please contact us at [email protected]. We can check your meter for you and help process an upgrade if needed.

What is the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS)?

The Radio Teleswitch Service uses a radio signal to control and manage specific older electricity meters, allowing seamless switching between peak and off-peak rates. Designed to support customers who use electricity for heating and hot water, the RTS is particularly beneficial for users of electric storage systems, panel heaters or immersion heaters, which often charge up overnight.

Introduced back in the 1980s, the RTS is now reaching the end of its operational life to the inability to maintain the equipment generating the radio signal. As a result, the Radio Teleswitch Service will be discontinued on 30th June 2025. Therefore, it is essential to arrange for an upgrade to your meter before this date to ensure continued service and accurate billing.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

If you are uncertain whether you have an RTS meter, here's what to consider:

  • Is there a separate switch box near your meter labelled with 'radio teleswitch'?
  • Do you heat your property using electricity or storage heaters?
  • Is there no gas supply to your area, encompassing rural properties and high-rise buildings?
  • Does your meter switch between peak and off-peak tariffs?

What happens if you do not upgrade your RTS meter?

If you decide not to upgrade, the functionality of your heating and/or hot water systems in your business may be impacted. You might experience consistent interruptions or fluctuations in service. Moreover, your electricity supplier will be unable to accurately assess your electricity consumption during peak and off-peak periods, which could lead to increased electricity expenses.
