British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme

Government support to help eligible manufacturers reduce electricity costs

The British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) is a UK Government initiative designed to reduce electricity costs for eligible manufacturing businesses across Great Britain. The scheme aims to strengthen industrial competitiveness, encourage investment and support growth across key manufacturing sectors.

Businesses that meet the eligibility criteria may qualify for relief on eligible electricity consumption relating to:

• Renewables Obligation (RO)
• Feed-in Tariffs (FiT)
• Capacity Market (CM)

Applications for the first year of the scheme are open between 1 October 2026 and 30 November 2026, with successful applicants beginning to receive relief from April 2027.

Could Your Business Be Eligible?

To qualify for BICS, businesses must meet four key criteria. 

1. Be registered with Companies House

Your business must be registered with Companies House. 

2. Operate within an eligible manufacturing sector

The scheme supports businesses operating within eligible manufacturing frontier industries and manufacturing foundation industries. Eligibility is determined using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. 

3. Manufacture eligible products in Great Britain

Support is available only for eligible products manufactured at sites within Great Britain. 

4. Meet minimum electricity consumption requirements

The manufacturing site must use at least 33 MWh of grid-supplied electricity annually.

Key Dates

What Relief Could Eligible Businesses Receive?

BICS provides relief from certain indirect electricity policy costs associated with qualifying electricity consumption. Approved businesses will receive relief under the scheme in accordance with Government eligibility requirements and scheme rules. 

Relief may apply to:

The government estimates that the scheme will support approximately 10,000 eligible businesses across Great Britain.

How to Apply

Applications must be completed directly through the Government application portal. 

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility

Check whether your business is likely to qualify using the Government's online eligibility checker. 

Step 2: Gather Supporting Information

Before starting your application, ensure you have the required documentation available.

You may be required to provide:

• Companies House registration number
• Manufacturing site details
• Meter Point Administration Numbers (MPANs)
• Electricity bills covering six consecutive months
• Information about products manufactured
• Supporting evidence relating to your operations 

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Complete and submit your application through the Government portal between 1 October and 30 November 2026. 

Step 4: Receive Your Decision

The Government will assess applications and notify businesses of the outcome from January 2027.

✓ MPAN information

✓ Electricity invoices covering six consecutive months

✓ Product manufacturing evidence
