BT Group sources 100% renewable electricity from TotalEnergies
TotalEnergies Gas & Power have signed a contract with BT Group to supply the company with 100% renewable electricity for three years from April 2022.
A mix of renewable sources will be used including solar, wind and hydro from sites across the UK.
The contract comprises of electricity supplies to c.3,100 BT Group sites with an annual estimated consumption of 1,124 GWh. This accounts for almost half of the total annual electricity consumed by BT in the UK.
As one of the largest electricity suppliers in the UK, TotalEnergies shares the ambition to become net zero by 2050 for all of its activities. This ambition is supported by the strategy to develop TotalEnergies as a broad-energy company, with oil and gas, low-carbon electricity and carbon-neutrality solutions as integrated parts of its business.
Dave Cranfield, General Manager of TotalEnergies Gas & Power said: “It’s with great pride that TotalEnergies are working with BT on their journey towards net zero carbon emissions by 2045 by supplying them with 100% renewable electricity. We will continue to work closely with our UK customers as the demand for renewable electricity grows, and TotalEnergies will continue to evolve and invest significantly in carbon neutral initiatives over the coming years.”
BT has led on climate action for over 28 years and was one of the first companies in the world to adopt science-based targets, directly linking its own goals to the overall level of reductions in emissions needed to limit the most harmful impacts of the climate crisis.
The company, which is the joint-largest private purchaser of electricity in the UK, recently announced that its network and buildings including offices and shops worldwide are all now powered with 100% renewable electricity.
Powering its business with renewable electricity is a key part of BT’s strategy and underpins its commitment to build back better - creating a more resilient, low carbon society.
As part of the transition to a low carbon business model, BT has pledged to become a net zero carbon emissions business by 2045 and has set targets in line with the most ambitious aim of the COP21 Paris Agreement - linking its targets to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Cyril Pourrat, Chief Procurement Officer at BT, said: "As an organisation that consumes nearly 1% of the UK’s electricity, it is important for BT to demonstrate its commitment to a green recovery. Purchasing 100 per cent renewable electricity from TotalEnergies sends a strong signal that renewables are important to the UK and today’s announcement underpins our commitment to climate action and in becoming a net zero carbon emissions business by 2045.”
