Pod Highlights...

  • Andy introduces Great British Energy, poised to drive growth and investment towards achieving 2030 net zero targets.
  • Hydrogen, battery storage and emerging technologies will play crucial roles, requiring government investment to kickstart new initiatives.
  • While transmission costs are expected to rise, this will largely depend on energy prices - in contrast to the potential cost scenarios if we remain dependent on the international gas market.
  • Suppliers are entrusted with making the right decisions with mandated access to consumer energy data. Additionally, consumers and businesses have more control than ever, allowing them to access and analyse their own consumption data and make informed choices.

There are several new policy changes due in the short and long term which may impact your business. We've highlighted a couple of significant changes:

From 1st October 2024, under new policy changes set out by the DESNZ (Department of Energy Security and Net Zero), as part of the UK governments commitment to maximising smart meter benefits, non-domestic energy suppliers are required to proactively offer detailed, half-hourly energy consumption data for both gas and power, to smaller non-domestic customers with AMR (automatic meter reader) and Smart Meters. In line with this, we've launched our TotalEnergies Insights Portal, allowing customers to easily access their half-hourly consumption data. For more information, please see our webpage on Half-Hourly Energy Consumption Data.

In 2026, the Market Wide Half-Hourly Settlement Programme (MHHS) is due to go live and is set to potentially accelerate the pathway to net zero and transform the electricity landscape into a smart and flexible energy system. This introduces site-specific reconciliation using half-hourly data, ensuring a faster and more accurate settlement process. In turn, providing greater transparency and accuracy in the measurement of energy usage and billing to better support businesses managing their energy consumption.
