Read time: 2 minutes

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) has hit the headlines recently as the UK ramps up efforts to transition to a modern and efficient future. With Lorraine Kelly fronting a new shutdown campaign, and energy suppliers increasing their customer engagement to process meter upgrades ahead of the switch off date, the countdown to 30th of June is on.

In this blog, join Alex Shelton, Head of Industry Operations as he outlines the key details you need to know about RTS meters, the phase-out, the benefits of upgrading to a smart meter, and the support available to you throughout this process.

So, stay informed, up to date and prepared to ensure your business continues to operate without disruptions during this transition period.

Over to you Alex...

" The RTS switch-off date is rapidly approaching, and we are diligently working to ensure the transition to new smart meters is seamless and well-coordinated. We strongly encourage businesses to take proactive measures well before the 30th of June to prevent any disruptions. Upgrading to a smart meter has numerous advantages too. You'll be based on what you've used and not on an estimate and they'll be no need to take manual meter reads, this is all done automatically. If you aren't sure what an RTS meter, or if you even have one within your business, I've set out what to look out for below and all the essential information you need to know".

What is the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS)?

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) uses a radio signal to control and manage specific older electricity meters, allowing seamless switching between peak and off-peak rates. Designed to support customers who use electricity for heating and hot water, the RTS is particularly beneficial for users of electric storage systems, panel heaters, or immersion heaters, which often charge up overnight.

Introduced back in the 1980s, the RTS is now reaching the end of its operational life due to the inability to maintain the equipment generating the radio signal. As a result, the Radio Teleswitch Service will be discontinued on 30th of June 2025. It's therefore essential to upgrade your meter before this date to ensure continued efficient service and accurate billing.

Smart Meters

Upgrade to a Smart meter and take control of your business energy. These are the new generation of energy meters which provide many benefits including:

  • Improved billing accuracy: You'll be billed on your actual consumption using the reads we'll be sent, rather than on an estimates. With accurate billing you can better manage your budget and avoid unexpected charges.
  • Better visibility of your energy consumption: With real time data that allows you to monitor your usage, you can identify peak times where you can implement energy-saving measures. By understanding your consumption habits, you can make informed decisions to optimise energy efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Automatic reads: One of the most convenient features of a smart meter is their ability to automatically send meter reads straight to us. This means you no longer need to manually take and submit readings, saving you time and effort.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

If you are uncertain whether you have an RTS meter, here's what to consider:

  • Is there a separate switch box near your meter labelled with 'radio teleswitch'?
  • Do you heat your business property using electricity or storage heaters?
  • Is there no gas supply to your area, encompassing rural properties and high-rise buildings?
  • Does your meter switch between peak and off-peak tariffs?

What happens if you do not upgrade your RTS meter?

If you decide not to upgrade, there is a risk that the functionality of your heating and/or hot water systems in your business may be impacted, and you might experience consistent interruptions or fluctuations in service. Moreover, your electricity supplier will be unable to accurately assess your electricity consumptions during peak and off-peak periods, which could lead to increased electricity expenses.

We're here to help

We're working in partnership with our meter operation provider SMS to facilitate the migration of our customers from RTS meters to smart meters. We've identified all customers with RTS meters, and SMS are getting in touch to arrange an appointment for a meter exchange. Due to the thousands of customers who require this change, we strongly recommend that customers schedule this in as soon as possible either by requesting a meter upgrade online, or by responding to the SMS team when contacted.

If we've been in touch, but you've yet to take any action, or are unsure if you have an RTS meter, please contact us for further support at [email protected]
